JAMES
ARMSTRONG.
Guitarist, singer and songwriter James Armstrong is a master of the West
Coast blues style. He identifies Jimi Hendrix and Robert Cray as
his vocal influences, and Albert Collins, Albert King and Eric Clapton
as guitarists who have inspired him. In 2001, he received two WC
Handy nominations for Contemporary Male Blues Guitarist of the Year and
blues song of the year.
Born in LA to a blues-singing mother and jazz guitar-playing father, James started playing music at an early age. He learned the blues by playing in the club scene of Southern California in the early 1980s, backing performers such as Big Joe Turner, Albert Collins, and Smokey Wilson. James has toured throughout the United States and Canada. He moved from Santa Cruz to the Midwest in 2003 to get closer to the national blues scene, and we are pleased to welcome him back to California.
Armstrong's first CD, Sleeping with a Stranger (HighTone, 1995), drew widespread critical acclaim. His second recording, Dark Night (1998), is a highly introspective CD that showcases slide guitar. His 2001 release Got It Goin' On included an impressive array of guitar styles and musical themes. Armstrong’s singing and guitar playing demonstrates the skills, experience, and emotions of a true bluesman. There are music samples on his website (www.jarmblues.com): try “Pennies and Picks” and “Baby’s Catwalkin’.”
“Whether alternating vibrant slide work with Hendrix-like rock lead or flat-picking BB King style, Armstrong smoothly redefines the range of contemporary blues” (Blues Access). “His charismatic live shows are full of haunting and subtle nuances that point to a life rich with experience, hardship, humor and sensitivity. James plays for and with his audience, extending the reach of the blues to include highly-charged sensuality, humor, yearning, healing and good lowdown fun!” (CBS Radio).
JEROME
WASHINGTON EXPRESS.
The Jerome Washington Express, founded in 1994 in San Diego County, cut
its teeth in venues throughout Southern California. Drew Arnold (guitar/vocals),
Tyler Mitchel (bass/vocals), and Jim Stromberg (drums/vocals) come together
to create an air tight trio that delivers a wide range of music that has
something for everyone. From smooth ballads to pseudo-funk to hard
driving blues, the authentic tone and sound of the band can move from traditional
to contemporary at any time. With great “on stage” energy producing
exciting performances, the band has a lot of fun with the audience.
Their long awaited debut album is still in the works, but you can visit
their website (www.jeromewashingtonexpress.com).
VOLUNTEER. Your Blues Society is run entirely by volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets. We could use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) and volunteer to work a shift at the show.
