PHILLIP
WALKER
Phillip Walker is a triple bonus - guitar player, vocalist and songwriter
with over 40 years of experience playing the Blues. Walker is the
former lead guitar player for Little Richard, Clifton Chenier, and Fats
Domino. Born on the Louisiana / Texas border, his influences include
his cousins (T-Bone Walker and Gatemouth Brown), Albert Collins, Freddie
King, and Lonesome Sundown. He has 8 highly acclaimed recordings that have
been past Grammy and W.C. Handy nominees. His most recent album, Live at
Biscuits & Blues (M.C. Records), was recorded in San Francisco and
is scheduled for release this September.
Walker is a pre rock and roll Blues guitarist, who focuses on expressive guitar work and subtle vocals. Guitar Player Magazine rates Phillip Walker as one of the 10 most important Blues guitarists living today. Like many other traditional Blues musicians, he has been working in Europe and Japan where traditional Blues is better supported and more widely appreciated. He played for us two years ago and many people felt it was one of our best shows, so we are bringing him back.
Here is what other people have to say about Phillip Walker: "Phillip Walker has been one of the major influences on my career", Robert Cray in Rolling Stone. "With all due respect to B.B. King, Phillip Walker has been the true King of the Blues for the last twenty years." West Coast Blues Review. "Walker's exquisitely refined guitar style recalls the fluidity and jazz flavored tones of both T-Bone Walker and B.B. King. Although his albums have gone largely under appreciated, they contain some of the best West Coast blues guitar work." Robert Santelli, The Big Book of Blues.
BALL & CHAIN
Ball and Chain is a band in the Rhythm and Blues business. They
play a variety of music from Jeff Beck and Tower of Power to traditional
blues artists like Willie Dixon, Etta James, Jimmy Reed, and Buddy Guy.
The band includes Lisa Plevel on lead vocals, Jon Smith on guitar and vocals,
Wil Anderson on bass, Mark White on keyboards, and Stan Whiting on drums.
These talented local musicians are geared up and ready to play the kind of blues that will keep your toes tapping all night long. They look forward to seeing all of their friends who have supported their appearances since they last played at the Blues Society.
VOLUNTEER
Your Blues Society is run entirely by volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment,
volunteers get into the shows for free and receive a couple free drink
tickets. We could use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail
number) and volunteer to work a shift at the show.
