COCO MONTOYA
Over the course of his 30-year career, guitarist and vocalist Coco Montoya's explosive guitar playing and soul-driven voice have made him one of the biggest names in the blues-rock world.  Coco Montoya was born in Santa Monica and played as a drummer in rock bands during the 1960s.  His blues career began in the mid-1970s at a chance meeting with blues great Albert Collins, who offered him a gig as a drummer.  Collins became Montoya's mentor, teaching him the secrets of Albert's “icy hot” style of blues guitar, while they toured together for the next five years.  In the early 1980s, Coco joined John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers and toured with them for ten years, playing with fellow guitarist Walter Trout.  In 1993, Collins told him it was time to move on, so Montoya stepped out on his own as a bandleader.  Four solo albums and non-stop touring of clubs, concert halls, and festivals around the world (200 dates a year) have built Montoya's reputation as one of the masters of blues guitar.  In 1996, he won the W.C. Handy Award for Best New Blues Artist.

His newest release “Can't Look Back” (Alligator Records) features Coco's “blistering contemporary blues…piercing attack, funky, shivery guitar tones and aggressive, soulful vocals.” (Blues Review).  “Heartfelt singing and a merciless guitar with a wicked icy burn…Montoya is a show stopper…he swings like a jazz man and stings like the iceman…he is one the truly gifted blues artists of his generation.” (Living Blues).

SOLID GROUND
Solid Ground is a south county blues band that plays venues in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties.  They play Chicago and Texas style blues, which contain driving shuffles that will make you find your way to the dance floor, along with blues flavored rock and Tex Mex.

Juan Marquez (lead vocals and lead guitar) plays a soulful blues guitar that has been influenced by Otis Redding, Buddy Guy, and Carlos Santana.  Al Oliveras (vocals, guitar, and keyboard) has traveled across the country playing music.  Jim Chavez (background vocals and bass) is a SLO native, who holds up the bottom  keeping the dancers happy.  Ronnie Simes (drums) is another SLO native, who gives the band that funky beat mixed with some Latin rhythms.

VOLUNTEER  Your Blues Society is run entirely by volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets.  We could use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) and volunteer to work a shift at the show.
