BLUES
REVIEW
The San Luis Obispo Blues Society welcomes Terry Hanck
and his band on Saturday, September 20. The Guy Budd Band will be
opening the show. The show starts at 8:00 pm at the SLO Vets Hall.
Tickets are $13 for members and $15 for the general public. All tickets
are sold at the door. You can buy a membership for $10 at the door
and get $2 off admission for a year of shows.
TERRY HANCK
Terry Hanck is well known for his hard blowing sax, incredible
range and gutsy vocals. Born in Chicago, Hanck was heavily influenced
by the blues, soul and jazz music of the 50’s and 60’s. After moving
to California in 1965, he toured with Elvin Bishop through most of the
70’s and 80’s and Bishop gave him plenty of opportunities to hone his craft
on stage. “Terry Hanck is a fine vocalist, an amazing showman, and
my favorite sax player,” says Bishop. Terry Hanck left the Bishop
band to tour under his own name in the late 80’s playing a signature mix
of New Orleans Gumbo, West Coast Jump and East Bay Funk, all delivered
with a heavy dose of blues and soul. He draws on a vast repertoire
of songs, including many originals and his energetic performances spotlight
an artist at the peak of his craft. His band includes Chris “Kid”
Anderson on guitar, Michael “Fly” Brooks on bass, and Butch Cousins on
drums. The band recently released their second album, I Keep Holdin’
On (Mo Muscle Music), which mixes high energy R&B with Hanck’s soulful
voice and sax.
THE GUY BUDD BAND
The Guy Budd Band features Guy Budd on guitar & vocals,
Andy Kulikowski on bass & vocals, Howard Emmons on drums, Ken Burton
on keyboard & vocals, and Roger Gatchet on harmonica. Guy Budd
has been performing on the Central Coast since 1978, and is well known
for his full-bodied voice and expressive guitar work. Kulikowski, Emmons,
and Burton anchor Budd's Hendrix influenced guitar work. The band's
performances primarily feature originals that encompass a wide range of
blues/rock styles, from screaming guitar jams to soulful ballads, supplemented
with traditional up tempo blues covers. This is a band that works
well together, exploring their own music while maintaining strong roots
in the blues.
VOLUNTEER
Your Blues Society is run entirely by volunteers. Besides
a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the shows for free and receive
a couple free drink tickets. We could use your help, so call 541-7930
(our voice mail number) or e-mail the volunteer coordinator at SLOBluesSociety@msn.com
and volunteer to work a shift at the show.

BOB OBERG
Bob Oberg passed away on August 6. For the last 15 years, Bob was the driving force behind the San Luis Obispo Blues Society. Bob selected and booked the bands, managed many aspects of the shows, and remained a consistent presence supporting the blues regardless of the situation. Bob was also a wonderful musician with a vast knowledge of the blues. He was the soul of the Blues Society, and his presence will be greatly missed. |
