BLUES REVIEW

The show starts at 8:00 PM at the SLO Vets Hall.  Tickets are $12 for members and $14 for the general public. You can buy a membership for $10 at the door and get $2 off admission for a year of shows.

DEJA BLU' with RED ARCHIBALD
Deja Blu' is a high-energy blues band from the Bay area, who will be performing with harmonica virtuoso Red Archibald.  They play a mixture of originals and blues classics, including jump blues, swing, and Chicago style.  Deja Blu' features vocalist Suzy Tyler ("blues mama with the big velvet voice"), Tom Lawson on keyboard and vocals, Eddie Mac McPhee on guitar, Bill Castro on bass, and Rick Castelo on drums.  This is a band that likes to have fun on stage, modifying blues classics in a way that makes them their own.  The rhythms range all the way from shuffles to rumbas, which makes this band popular at dance clubs in the Bay area.

Red Archibald (harmonica virtuoso, singer and entertainer) performs high energy R&B, heartfelt blues and swinging jump tunes.  From 1970 to 1982, Red played mainly on the west coast with many different blues and R&B performers, such as Taj Mahal, Elvin Bishop, and Gatemouth Brown.  In 1982, he moved to Europe for nine years, touring extensively, and playing with blues legends Memphis Slim and Champion Jack Dupree. He returned to the U.S. in the 1990s and has become "one of the best R&B shows to hit the Bay area scene" (SF Guardian).

According to Real Blues Magazine, "Red is a first rate harpman and vocalist with a melodic jazz style and sweet tone."  Blues Access says his CDs are "roadhouse tough and finger snappin' solid - hardworking, earnest and likable in a stew of West Coast Soul".

VALERIE JOHNSON and the NEW SOUND BOOGIE BAND
Valerie Johnson and the New Sound Boogie Band feature Valerie on vocals and washboard, Gus Thomasson ("Dr. Bottom") on bass, Raeanna Thomasson ("bongo blues mama") on bongos and conga, and "Al B. Blue" Ingram on guitar and slide guitar.  Their music has a "semi-acoustic, roots flavor" that includes an eclectic mixture of blues, gospel, New Orleans, rock 'n roll, and fun, obscure songs.  In other words, this is good time dance music.  These veteran musicians play at a variety of venues and they are regular performers on Thursday nights at the Bon Temp Creole Café in SLO.

VOLUNTEER
Your Blues Society is run entirely by volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets.  We could use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) or e-mail the volunteer coordinator at SLOBluesSociety@aol.com and volunteer to work a shift at the show.
