BLUES SHOW REVIEW. The San Luis Obispo Blues Society presents the acid-laced blues of Eddie Turner on Saturday, March 1.  The Mighty Croon Dogs will be opening the show.  The show begins at 8:00 pm at the SLO Vets Hall, 801 Grand Avenue in San Luis Obispo.  SLO Dance is offering free dance lessons from 7:30 - 8:00 pm.  Tickets are $17 for Blues Society members and $20 for the general public.  21 and over, please.  For more information, call 805/541-7930.

EDDIE TURNER.
While Eddie Turner’s sound is firmly rooted in the blues, as evidenced by his 2006 Blues Music Award nomination for Best New Artist, we also agree that he is “one of the hottest genre-melding contemporary blues artists.”  Turner has released two recordings on the Northern Blues label, Rise (2005) and The Turner Diaries (2006) and has toured throughout North America & Europe.  Here are some excerpts from his bio:

“Otherworldly”, “scorching”, “polyrhythmic” and “chilling” have all been used to describe Eddie Turner’s guitar playing.  Born in Cuba and raised in Chicago, Eddie Turner's influences stem from both the Afro-Cuban rhythms of his heritage and his immersion in the music of the time - blues, rock and R&B.  In 1974 he played with Grammy-nominated Tracy Nelson and Mother Earth.  Eddie soon joined Zephyr and wrote the last highly acclaimed Zephyr album Heartbeat with founders Candy and David Givens.  Eddie was also a member of the legendary 4-nikators.

In 1995, Eddie joined Otis Taylor and Kenny Passarelli to form the Otis Taylor Band and was instrumental in creating the Otis Taylor sound.  Eddie continually received rave reviews for his incredible psychedelic guitar playing.

“If anybody ever went down to the Crossroads and let the Devil tune his guitar it was probably Eddie Turner.  Man, you get chills every time the guy strikes a note!  And the expressions he makes while he's talking out each lick leave one convinced he's channeling other-worldly ancestral demi-gods.”  -Jeff Jaisun, BluesToDo.com, May 2003

Eddie is currently touring with bassist Jimmy Trujillo and drummer Ed Michaels.  More information and music downloads are available from his website (www.eddiedevilboy.com).

THE MIGHTY CROON DOGS.  The Mighty Croon Dogs have long been a staple of the local dance scene, and with recent personnel changes, they have added swing material to their repertoire.  Supplemented by a finely tuned mix of soul, R&B and zydeco, this band puts on a performance calculated to goad dancers into a frenzy.  The band includes Billy Foppiano on lead guitar and vocals, Jerome Taylor on drums, Frankie Paredes on bass, Scott Wright on saxophone, and Steve Mazzeta on guitar.

VOLUNTEER.Your Blues Society is run entirely by volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets.  We could use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) and volunteer to work a shift at the show.
