MICHAEL
BURKS
Michael entered
the world with blues in his blood. His grandfather played acoustic,
Delta-style blues guitar in Arkansas, and his father was a bass player
who performed in Milwaukee’s blues clubs, often backing harmonica legend
Sonny Boy Williamson. Michael got his first guitar at age two and
played his first gig at age six. In the early 1970s, his family moved
back to Arkansas and opened a Blues club. Michael spent the next
decade leading the house band and backing the blues acts that passed through
town. In 1997, Michael released a self-produced debut album, From
the Inside Out, which was rated by Living Blues as one of the best debut
discs of the year. In 2000, Burks received a W.C. Handy Blues award
nomination for best New Artist, even though he was already a hard-working
professional. He soon joined Alligator records and released Make
It Rain (2001) and I Smell Smoke (2004).
Burks received two
W.C. Handy Award nominations in 2004, for best Blues guitar player and
Blues song of the year. From musical roots connecting him to Freddie
King and Albert Collins, Burks has created a sound and style all his own.
His hard-driving guitar playing, soulful vocals, and heartfelt intensity
have captivated audiences across the country. In the words of Blues
Revue, “Make no mistake, Burks is his own bluesman. Hard-hitting
blues, outrageous tone…blazing, explosive solo skills…part rock, part soul
and filled with plenty of blues sensibility.”
JULIE
& THE BADDOGS
Julie and the BadDogs
play an eclectic mixture of blues, soul, and rock music. The band
is led by Julie Beaver, who has been wowing audiences all over California
since she picked up the violin at the age of four. From Bach to Blues
to Bluegrass, Julie plays it all and she sings like a saucy angel.
Rhythm section Art Decco (drums) and Bruce Sorensen (bass and vocals) nail
the groove to the floor and dare you not to dance. Topped off by
Grammy award winner Louie Ortega’s fiery guitar and vocals, this is one
hot band. Julie and the BadDogs also perform regularly at the Paso
Robles Inn and the Cambria Pines Lodge.
VOLUNTEER
Your Blues Society is run entirely by
volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the
shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets. We could
use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) or e-mail the volunteer
coordinator at sloblues@slonet.org and volunteer to work a shift at the
show.
