CAFE
R&B
It’s not easy to describe the power of a Café R&B performance.
It’s not only that Roach has a haunting voice with an astonishing vocal
and emotional range, and is hot enough to melt the polar icecap.
Or that Byl Carruthers, the lead guitarist, alternates seamlessly between
soulful and sizzling. Or the way the rhythm section verges on out
of control. Or the soaring keyboard interludes. Some reviewers
express the experience by resorting to hyperbole; Hits Magazine provides
this description, “Imagine Etta James riding a Harley out of an active
volcano and you’ll have some vague inkling of the vocal power emanating
from Café R&B’s Roach …” Others employ some variant of
“Stunned is not a strong enough word to describe what they did to the audience.”
(Music Connection). The mix of original compositions and classic
material like Born Under a Bad Sign and Killing Floor is truly an educational
experience. We wouldn’t compare this band to any other; a Café
R&B show is a unique and unforgettable experience.
Based in Los Angeles, for the past eight years Café R&B has
honed their ensemble performance at blues clubs throughout the US and
Europe, and are regularly featured at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago.
Besides lead singer Roach, the band includes Byl Carruthers on guitar,
Harry Cohen on piano and organ, Ken Dooley on bass, and Steve Klong on
drums. Their first CD “Black & White” (itWorks Music) was released
in 1998. In 2002, they released their second CD “Blues and all the
Rest” which is available from www.kingklong.com/cafeR&B/.
THE
MIGHTY CROON DOGS
Kick-starting this Blues Show will be one of the County’s favorite
dance bands, the Mighty Croon Dogs. Jump aboard as this versatile
local group takes the crowd on an uplifting Blues Cruise - a spirited musical
steamboat ride up the Mississippi River. The Mighty Croon Dogs plan
some fun and frisky stops along the way: the blues-infused Mississippi
Delta, funky New Orleans, deeply soulful Memphis, and a jumping joyride
to Chicago, with a detour to Detroit’s soul-flavored rhythm ‘n blues.
Known all over the Central Coast for their sweet harmonies and tight
musicianship, the Mighty Croon Dogs include “Guitar Wizard” Billy Foppiano
(guitar and vocals), Laura Lee (vocals and percussion), Scott Wright (saxophone
and vocals), Geert de Lange (bass and vocals), and Denny Carvalho (drums
and vocals). Check out their website at www.funlivemusic.com.
VOLUNTEER
Your Blues Society is run entirely by volunteers. Besides
a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the shows for free and receive
a couple free drink tickets. We could use your help, so call 541-7930
(our voice mail number) or e-mail the volunteer coordinator at SLOBluesSociety@msn.com
and volunteer to work a shift at the show.
