LOU
PRIDE.
Lou Pride was born in North Chicago in
the 1940s to a poor, working class family. His early musical influences
included listening to B. B. King and singing gospel in the church choir
under Reverend E. J. Cole (Nat King Cole’s father). He has a gospel-inflected,
baritone voice and a gift for songwriting that has led to 9 albums and
11 single releases. He should be one of the most famous names in
soul and R & B, but each time he comes close to fame, something happens
and he starts over again.
Lou’s first R & B recordings in the 1970s were on small record labels in Texas and Memphis. He moved to New Mexico in the 1980s where as a single dad he raised a family and made occasional recordings for Black Gold Records. Returning to Chicago in the 1990s, he met Curtis Mayfield who produced his album Love at Last (WMB Records) in 1995. This record brought him to the attention of larger record companies with national distributions. Since 1997, he has produced 5 CDs for Ichiban, Ice House, and Severn Records. These recordings have garnered great reviews and solidified his reputation as one of the great soul-blues singers performing today.
His most recent CD, Keep on Believing (Severn Records, 2005), is a beautiful collection of songs written by Lou plus a soulful version of Bob Marley’s “Waiting in Vain”. Lou’s mellow baritone voice, earthy lyrics, and positive and playful nature are evident throughout this fine CD.
GUY BUDD.
The Guy Budd Band features Guy Budd on
guitar & vocals, Howard Emmons on drums, Will Andrews on bass, and
Ken Burton on keyboard. Guy Budd has been performing on the Central Coast
since 1978, and is well known for his full-bodied voice and wildly proficient
guitar work. Emmons, Andrews, and Burton anchor Budd's Hendrix influenced
guitar. The band performs a variety of original songs, from cutting
blues/rock to soulful ballads, along with traditional blues numbers.
VOLUNTEER
Your Blues Society is run entirely by
volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the
shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets. We could
use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) and volunteer to
work a shift at the show.
