BLUES REVIEW
Start the New Year right with some dancing to the blues.  The San Luis Obispo Blues Society presents James Armstrong on Saturday, January 10.  Life at the Top will be opening the show. The show starts at 8:00 PM at the SLO Vets Hall.  Tickets are $13 for members and $15 for the general public. Buy a membership for $10 at the door and get $2 off admission for a year of shows.

JAMES ARMSTRONG
Guitarist, singer, and songwriter James Armstrong personifies the West Coast blues style.  The son of a blues-singing mother and jazz guitar-playing father, Armstrong got the music bug at an early age, forming his first band in the seventh grade. He singles out Jimi Hendrix and Robert Cray as singing influences, and Albert Collins, Albert King, and Eric Clapton as guitarists whose work has inspired him.  Based in the Los Angeles area in the early 1980s, Armstrong learned by playing with legendary blues performers such as Big Joe Turner and Albert Collins.  He relocated to the Bay area in the late 1990s and tours in both the US and Europe.

His first CD, 1995's Sleeping With a Stranger, drew widespread critical acclaim.  In 1998, he recorded Dark Night, which features his debut on slide guitar and soulful, introspective lyrics. His latest CD, Got It Goin’ On, was one of the finest electric blues records of 2000, garnering two W.C. Handy Award nominations: one for Contemporary Male Artist of the Year and one for Song of the Year.  Dynamic in its performance and execution, Got It Goin' On is packed with scorching guitar work and soulful vocals. The songs cover a wide spectrum of experiences; "I let the tone of the lyrics dictate the style of the music," says Armstrong of his songwriting process. LIFE AT THE TOP
“We make ‘em get up and dance” is the motto of the five-piece band, Life at the Top.  Their musical influences range from the legendary Albert Collins to contemporary blues artists such as Debbie Davies and Tommy Castro, as well as Jimi Hendrix and the Allman Brothers.  The band includes Karen Wilkins on vocals and keyboard, Guitar Slim on guitar and vocals, Dudley Dean on guitar and vocals, Dan McPherson on bass and vocals, and Ralph Liddle on drums.

VOLUNTEER
Your Blues Society is run entirely by volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets.  We could use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) or e-mail the volunteer coordinator at SLOBluesSociety@msn.com and volunteer to work a shift at the show.
