KENNY
'Blues Boss" WAYNE
Kenny “Blues Boss”
Wayne is a master of the blues and boogie-woogie piano. Living Blues
magazine says that Wayne is “an artist bringing the piano back to the front
ranks of contemporary blues”. Real Blues magazine rated him the best
blues artist of the year in 2001 and the best Canadian blues pianist for
seven years in a row. Kenny Wayne’s piano styles range from New Orleans
blues and jazz to Kansas City swing and West Coast jump blues. Besides
Kenny on piano and vocals, the band includes Dave "Hurricane" Hoerl on
harmonica, Takezo on guitar, Michael Messer on drums, and Paul Olguin on
bass.
Kenny Wayne is literally the son-of-a-Preacher-man who moved to Los Angels as a child. As a child prodigy on piano, his father encouraged him to play gospel, although he was fascinated by the boogie-woogie sounds of performers like Floyd Dixon and Fats Domino. By the time he was a teenager, he was playing in R&B bands and backing visiting blues / R&B performers. His father attended a concert where he backed Jimmy Reed in 1962, and the brawl that broke out at the performance temporarily ended Wayne’s blues career. In the late 1960s, Kenny was a key player in the Los Angeles R&B scene, backing performers such as Delaney & Bonnie, Sly Stone, and the Doobie Brothers. When the disco craze swept the Southland, he headed to Canada with a R&B review band. He settled in Vancouver where he played R&B, jazz, and blues piano. In the 1990s, while touring in Europe, Kenny made the transition to playing primarily blues and boogie-woogie. His first solo debut, Alive and Loose (Real Blues Records, 1995) showcased his boogie-woogie style and launched his new blues career. In 1999, he toured Europe as part of the Joe Louis Walker All-Star band. All together, he has released five records, including Let it Loose (Electro-Fi Records, 2005) which combines brilliant piano playing with inventive songwriting and storytelling. As Juke Blues says, “Wayne plays boogie with the piston-beat of a Pete Johnson while his blues style is reminiscent of Memphis Slim.” Read more about Wayne at http://www.kennybluesboss.com/.
THE CINDERS
The Cinders is an incendiary dance band
composed of a talented quartet of experienced blues musicians. The
Cinders will be releasing their first CD, Rooms on Fire, at the upcoming
show. The CD features a title track in which everyone dies in the
great blues tradition. The band, on the CD and on the stage, includes
Dorian Michael (guitar), Brett Hoover (vocals), Paul Olguin (bass), and
Dean Giles (drums). The band is notable for an authentic blues sound that
is emotionally rooted in circa 1960’s Chicago.
VOLUNTEER
Your Blues Society is run entirely by
volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the
shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets. We could
use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) and volunteer to
work a shift at the show.
