SONNY RHODES
Texas
born Sonny Rhodes fronts a driving 5-piece blues band that delivers a smoking
mix of contemporary blues. Influenced early on by T-Bone Walker and
Percy Mayfield, Rhodes learned to play guitar before enlisting in the navy
in 1957. In the 1960’s, he played with Freddie King and Albert Collins.
He moved to Oakland in the late 1960’s where he was taught to play lap
steel guitar by L.C. “Good Rockin” Robinson. Since the 1970’s, Sonny Rhodes
has traveled the world performing at over 250 concerts and blues festivals
a year.
Sonny’s
music is powerful and deeply emotional. His gravel voice is a perfect compliment
to the raw edged Texas blues sound of his guitar and lap steel guitar style
of playing. He is an imaginative songwriter whose songs tell a story,
“Songs come across me, and you have to work them out, write ‘em down, and
put them into shape”. Although Rhodes made several records for independent
labels in the 70’s and 80’s, he came into his own in the 90’s with critically
acclaimed albums for Ichiban and Kingsnake. In 2003, he recorded
a live CD, “Texas Fender Bender” (Greater Planet Entertainment).
He has been honored by the Smithsonian Institute for his contribution to
the arts and nominated for nine W.C. Handy Awards. Preview the performance

BIG DADDY'S BLUES

ultra-danceable Big Daddy's Blues Band has garnered a large and loyal following

of old favorites and the band's house rocking originals keep them coming
back for more. The members of the band include Stan Manning on bass,
Greg Barnes on drums, Kevin McCracken on harmonica, Dan Colvin on sax and
vocals, Jesse Savage on guitar, and Joe Pilloud on B3 organ and piano.

a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the shows for free and receive
a couple free drink tickets. We could use your help, so call 541-7930

and volunteer to work a shift at the show.
