MARK
HUMMEL AND THE BLUES SURVIVORS WITH SPECIAL GUEST RUSTY ZINN
Mark
Hummel has been instrumental in the revival of harmonica-led blues bands,
particularly as the organizer of the famed harmonica blow out series.
Raised in Los Angeles, Mark absorbed the music of such Chicago based harp
blowers as Little Walter, James Cotton, and Sonny Boy Williamson, before
settling in Berkeley, California in 1972. There he played with local
bluesmen such as Cool Papa, Boogie Jake, Mississippi Johnny Waters and
Sonny Lane. In 1980, he took the helm to lead the popular Blues Survivors
Band. “Every time a list of the world's best living harp players
comes out, West Coast harpist Mark Hummel makes the top five. Incorporating
jazz and swing into a blues format, Hummel has developed a style that,
while sounding laid back, is loaded with improvisational virtuosity.” -
Grant Britt/Independent Weekly. “Hummel and his swinging brand of
blues are a match made in heaven” - Living Blues.
Hummel has over a dozen Electro-Fi recordings to his credit, including Ain't Easy No More (2006), Blues Harp Meltdown (2004), Rolling Fork Revisited with Johnny Dyer (2004), and Blowin' My Horn (2004). Mark Hummel and the Blues Survivors are famed for their non-stop touring, which has included numerous coast to coast dates, European tours, and appearances at the San Francisco Blues Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, King Biscuit Blues Festival, Waterfront Blues Festival, and the Monterey Jazz Festival, to name just a few.
The Blues Survivors feature Bob Welsh on keyboards, Marty Dodson on drums, and RW Grigsby on bass, with Rusty Zinn featured on guitar. Zinn is famous for his burning guitar work and soulful vocals. Introduced to blues music as a teen, Zinn picked up the guitar at age 17 and honed his skills playing in several Bay Area bands. Over the years he has backed up a number of blues legends, including Luther Tucker, Snooky Pryor, Jimmy Rogers, Kim Wilson, and Pinetop Perkins.
Soundclips and more are available at Mark Hummel's website.
GUY BUDD & THE GYPSY SOULS. Guy Budd has been performing on the Central Coast since 1978, and is well known for his full-bodied voice and wildly proficient guitar work along with his signature 69’ left handed Fender Stratocaster. The Gypsy Souls feature Howard Emmons on drums, Wil Anderson on bass, and Ken Burton on keyboard. Emmons, Anderson, and Burton anchor Budd's Hendrix influenced guitar. With originals that encompass a wide range of blues, funk and jazz styles, from screaming guitar jams to soulful ballads, this is a band that works well together, exploring their own brand of music while maintaining strong roots in the blues.
VOLUNTEER. Your Blues Society is run entirely by volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets. We could use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) and volunteer to work a shift at the show.
