A Hands-On Natural Language Project

The Mini-Moble Sandbox

Look, it says right here in the directions...it's "Mini "and
it's "Mobile" so it can't be THAT heavy.  Now quit gripin'.

Admit it, sometimes we get desperate for something different to do in therapy.  Here's an idea for the multi-modality fans. Instead of doing an assignmnent on paper or on a classroom board, try going ultra-tactile.  Build a portable sandbox and use it as a prop to facilitate language.  Keep a lookout for a large cardboard carton or a metal pan. If you really get carried away you can convert an old wagon into a sandmobile. When you get your container picked out just line it with plastic and dump in the sand. Ask a local building supply to donate some. Keep a spray bottle of water handy so that the sand stays moist.  Erase with a ruler.  Once your box is ready you've got a new therapy tool.  Use your language facilitation techniques to work toward individual goals.

Here are some therapy ideas you can do with the Mini-Mobile Sandbox:

  • Invent secret symbols (and decide what they mean)   <>  #  @/  %0  !+!
  • Play Tic Tac Toe
  • Make patterns and designs (use spoons, cups, brushes, combs, etc.)
  • Make sand sculptures
  • Build a sand town and supplement with folded paper buildings, paper cups, bridges, and living "weed trees"
  • Use a magnifying glass to explore the world of crystals

To the therapist:  Send the following home with the child
